Illustrator, comic artist and petter of stray cats

About

Riya is an illustrator and comic artist based in Chennai, India. They use their skill to express their existential woes and support for social causes. They usually do this in a rather unhinged way - with stories featuring cats and queers in space, cheeky children and a lot of music-inspired journaling. On most days you can find them attempting to befriend stray cats, wishing they could drink coffee, and eating more instant noodles than is good for them.

Cat Curry is an English + Tamil picture book. It's a project from my undergrad days, but I'm still quite fond of it - even though my art style has changed quite a bit since I worked on it! Inspired by my real life cat, Broccoli, who funnily enough does look like a variety of other veggies (and is cute enough to eat)!Enjoy this excerpt!

I worked at an EdTech Start-up as 'Head Illustrator' for three long years of my life. Here's what I did:

I made a LOT of comics, like this one...

... And this one!

I also designed a bunch of ads, social media content and print merch!

14 days. 15 Rizvis. One remote house. What could go wrong?Sehar and Tanaaz would rather spend their winter vacation abroad or hanging out with friends. Instead, they have to visit their grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles in beautiful wintry Solan. Between odd family antics, failed cooking attempts, midnight snacks and strange sounds from the attic, this winter vacation will be one they’ll remember for a long time.

(Can you tell from the illustrations? In this book I really enjoyed focusing on food, culture and chaotic family dynamics!)
